Did You Know? September 2021

Did you know that lead is not dead?

According to a recent Frost and Sullivan report, the global market for lead-acid batteries is estimated to reach $11 billion by 2030. The report, “Global Stationary Lead Acid Battery Growth Opportunities” attributed the technology’s low price, ease of recyclability, and user friendliness will continue to expedite adoption across telecom and data centers, automobile, oil and gas, and utility industries.

Did you know that a lead-acid battery produces up to 99% recyclable and reusable materials?

Did you know that a jumbo jet has up to 92% recyclable and reusable materials? According to the BBC Business News, more than 5400 commercial aircraft around the world are in storage; and many of them will never see service again and are heading for the recycling hanger.

Did you know millions of electric vehicle (EV) batteries will be retired in the next decade, and there is no existing recycling process in place for them?

In the scramble to come up with a solution, one approach is looking at using batteries that have some residual life in them for energy storage and other less demanding applications until they are fully spent. Another approach is coming up with a recycling process and locations. The latter is where the big bucks are being spent; and we’re talking $ billions. I guess that the end justifies the means. No pun intended.

Did you know that even though the Maldives is one of the world’s smallest countries, it shares the record at six for the number of different electrical plug and socket configurations?

Someone once said that “the nice thing about codes and standards is that there are so many to choose from.” Well, the crazy mix of evolutionary standards has created a myriad of voltages, frequencies and plug and socket arrangements throughout the world. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) recognizes 15 different plug and socket types. Have we learned anything from this multifaceted approach? Well, just try and plug a standard iPhone charger into an Android device.

Did you know that the concept of a cellular phone existed long before you held one in your hand?

For example, Nicola Tesla in 1926 claimed that people all over the world would be able to communicate instantly with devices that would fit inside a vest pocket. A Motorola engineer, Martin Cooper, is credited with the invention of the first handheld mobile cellphone. He also made the first public witnessed call which ironically was to the office of Motorola’s main competitors at AT&T.

Did you know that the flight data recorder used to investigate aircraft accidents that is commonly referred to as the Black Box is neither?

It has always been a bright red or orange and round in shape.
