264 MW of Networked Load Banks Support Large-Scale Data Center Commissioning

Commissioning 933 MW of Behind-the-Meter Generation for a Hyperscale Data Center

    Customer & Project Profile:

A leading S&P 500 company (customer name withheld due to project confidentiality) operating a data center with behind-the-meter power generation in West Texas required a fleet of 4.8 MW, 480 V, three-phase load banks rated at 1.0 power factor to support large-scale commissioning of its behind-the-meter generation infrastructure.

The Challenge: Commissioning Power Before Grid Interconnection

The grid-interconnection schedule extended beyond the planned data center construction timeline (18-24 months), making behind-the-meter (BTM) generation essential to the deployment strategy.

This created a critical requirement: the power infrastructure had to be thoroughly tested and commissioned before it could reliably support mission-critical loads.

A 933 MW natural gas power plant was being developed to support the large-scale data center campus, requiring hundreds of megawatts of load-bank capacity to test and commission the BTM power system.

    Industry Context

Grid capacity and interconnection timelines are increasingly influencing how large data centers secure power. The U.S. Department of Energy has identified lengthy transmission development timelines and growing hyperscale demand as factors driving increased interest in co-located and behind-the-meter power solutions.

The Solution: 264 MW of Networked Load Banks

Eagle Eye supplied 55 networked TALON™ Apex load banks, providing 264 MW of combined testing capacity by allowing multiple load banks to operate together as large testing blocks.

    Each load bank provided:

    • 4.8 MW capacity
    • 480V, 3-phase
    • 1.0 power factor
    • 5,774 amps per phase
    • Project-specific configuration provided 1 kW minimum load-step resolution
    • Modbus TCP network connectivity

The networked architecture allows the 4.8 MW units to operate in coordinated 35–40 MW testing blocks, providing scalable capacity as the facility’s power infrastructure expands.

Eagle Eye supported the project from order through delivery and preparation for site commissioning, including equipment coordination, networking, installation support, spare parts, and collaboration with other project vendors.

Delivered Results: 264 MW in Five Months

Eagle Eye Power Solutions successfully delivered 55 networked TALON Apex load banks, representing 264 MW of total load-bank capacity, on an accelerated schedule. Deliveries were phased in approximately 25–50 MW increments over a five-month period to support the customer’s project schedule and preparation for site commissioning.

    Large-Scale Commissioning Capability

The delivered load bank system is designed to support coordinated testing in 35–40 MW networked blocks, allowing the customer to apply and control substantial electrical loads across the site as commissioning progresses.

With 4.8 MW individual load banks, 480 V three-phase operation, 1.0 power factor, and Modbus TCP communications, the system supports scalable load application, power-system validation, and repeatable testing across the data center’s behind-the-meter generation infrastructure.

    Why It Matters

As BTM generation becomes an increasingly important part of data center power infrastructure, load banks are evolving beyond traditional UPS and emergency-power testing to become an essential part of commissioning, validating, and maintaining primary power systems.

Large-scale data centers are changing how power is generated, delivered, and tested. Eagle Eye Power Solutions provides the load-bank technology, technical expertise, and project support needed to help customers commission and maintain these increasingly complex power systems. As timelines compress, choose a partner that can deliver on schedule and scale to the demands of your most challenging projects.
