264 MW of Networked Load Banks Support Behind-the-Meter Power for Large-Scale Data Center

Supporting the Testing and Commissioning of Large-Scale Behind-the-Meter Power Generation

    Customer:

A Top 10 S&P company operating a data center with behind-the-meter power generation in West Texas required a 4.8 MW, 480V, three-phase load bank rated at 1.0 power factor.

    Challenge:

As data center power demands continue to grow, securing traditional grid connections can take significantly longer than the 18–24-month construction timeline of a new facility. To accelerate development and provide reliable power, data center operators are increasingly turning to behind-the-meter (BTM) generation and distributed energy resources, including natural gas generation, battery energy storage, and large-scale microgrids.

This shift creates a new requirement: these power systems must be thoroughly tested and commissioned before they can reliably support mission-critical loads.

For this project, a 933 MW natural gas power plant was being developed to support a large-scale data center campus. The project required hundreds of megawatts of load-bank capacity to test and commission the BTM power infrastructure.

    Solution:

Eagle Eye Power Solutions supplied 264 MW of networked AC load banks, allowing multiple load banks to operate together as large testing blocks.

    Each load bank provided:

    • 4.8 MW capacity
    • 480V, 3-phase
    • 1.0 power factor
    • 5,774 amps per phase
    • 1 kW minimum load-step resolution
    • Modbus TCP network connectivity

The networked design allows load banks to be combined into large testing systems, supporting power blocks of approximately 35–40 MW and providing the flexibility needed as the facility’s power infrastructure expands.

Eagle Eye supported the project from order through expected commissioning, including equipment coordination, networking, installation support, spare parts, and collaboration with other project vendors.

    Results:

Eagle Eye delivered 264 MW of load-bank capacity on an accelerated schedule, with deliveries ranging from approximately 25–50 MW over a five-month period.

The scalable, networked solution provides the customer with the capacity needed to:

    • Commission large-scale BTM generation
    • Validate system performance before serving critical loads
    • Support ongoing testing and maintenance
    • Expand testing capacity as power generation and facility loads increase

As BTM generation becomes an increasingly important part of data center power infrastructure, load banks are evolving beyond traditional UPS and emergency-power testing to become an essential part of commissioning, validating, and maintaining primary power systems.

Large-scale data centers are changing how power is generated, delivered, and tested. Eagle Eye Power Solutions provides the load-bank technology, technical expertise, and project support needed to help customers commission and maintain these increasingly complex power systems.
