Switched Mode Rectifier/chargers (SMR’s) are the dominant method of charging stationary batteries for telecom, data and other standby power application. The vast majority of these are forced air cooled. In North America, the exception is with the utility companies who still favor older linear technologies, mainly Silicone Controlled Rectifiers (SCR’s).
So why the reluctance of utility companies to use the lighter, more efficient and user friendly to adopt SMR’s? This presentation will explore the issues and argue the case for a second look at SMR’s, in particular, convection cooled SMR’s.
The presenters will call upon their experiences in both working with and manufacturing chargers for the major user groups and applications for battery chargers to provide further context on where have been and where we are going as SMR chargers take on wider adoption. The objective of this presentation is to be an education thought changer on critical DC SMR chargers and modern manufacturing benefits Utilities of the future should be considering.
